The Moral Machine project, built by the MIT Media Lab\u2019s Scalable Cooperation Group, is a game-like platform that presents users with a choice between\u202ftwo\u202foutcomes in a scenario in which a self-driving car is going to crash. Users must decide if the car should continue\u202fon its path or\u202fswerve to change course, where doing one or the other will\u202faffect how many people are killed; whether pedestrians or passengers are\u202fprotected; whether people of\u202fdifferent ages or social positions are favored;\u202fetc. The idea is that gathering data about people\u2019s choices can inform the\u202fprogramming of autonomous vehicles,\u202fturning them into, as it says on the\u202ftin, moral machines.<\/p>\n

In essence, then, the Moral Machine project seeks to\u202fcrowdsource\u202fguidelines\u202ffor the programming of autonomous vehicles, by using a version of a classic philosophical thought experiment:\u202fthe\u202ftr<\/p>\n

This paper explains how and why the Moral Machine goes astray. It collects\u202fseveral apparently disparate kinds of worries and shows how they flow from\u202fa few\u202fbasic methodological errors. Both explicitly and\u202fimplicitly, the paper argues,\u202fthe Moral Machine asks the wrong questions, framing the ethical choices in terms that\u202fensure\u202frespondents will fail to make good decisions.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
